Fastball: Ranges from 91-95 mph, sitting at 92 mph, throws with a four-seam grip. Capable of throwing in all directions. Misses off the plate and keeps it down in the zone. Attacks the strike zone and misses barrels with it. Uses it effectively against LHH’s inside and under the hands.
Cutter: Ranges from 88-90 mph. Has very late and hard movement. Uses it effectively against RHH’s to jam them. Works it to both sides of the plate and keeps it down in the zone. Generates a lot of groundballs and weak contact from it.
Curveball: Ranges from 73-75 mph. Has late sweeping (10-4) movement. Uses it as a strikeout pitch. Capable of throwing it for called strikes or as a chase pitch out of the zone. Command over it gets stronger as the game goes on. Will use it against both LHH’s and RHH’s.
Changeup: 83-85 mph. Maintains his arm speed. Has late dropping movement. Rarely throws it, but has the ability to throw it for called strikes or as a chase pitch. Keeps it down in the zone. Gets into trouble with it when it straightens out and he leaves it up.
Control: Gets stronger as the game goes on. Rarely misses over the plate. Gets good downhill plane on his pitches. Keeps the ball in the ballpark, generates weak contact with all pitches. Capable of throwing any pitch in any count, in any location. Very intelligent pitcher, who understands how to set hitters up.
Delivery: Smooth, clean delivery with easy arm action and arm speed. Has a slight hesitation in his arm action as he strides (does not have any hesitation when pitching from the stretch). Plant foot lands in-line with the plate and his body does not fall off to one side with any significance. Does not like to throw over to first and does not have a great move, but is quick to the plate.
Physical Description: Physically imposing pitcher. Long limbs, high waist and great muscular strength throughout his frame. Powerful lower half, with muscular legs and round rear. Muscular back and shoulder. Big hands and feet. Mid-section has some softness, but is of no concern. Has no major health concerns, and has made over 30 starts a year since 2008.
Summary: A front-line workhorse starter, capable of handling a heavy workload of innings and being a strikeout per inning guy. A pitching staff leader, who commands respect and has a tonne of playoff experience. #1 starter on a playoff team who will consistently be among the best pitchers in the league.
